Just like anything else, employment agencies vary as far as how well they will work for you. Although most have some benefit beyond what you would expect if you are conducting your own job search, you should be aware of some fine points.

First of all, most of them are very affirming. Employment agencies try to build up your confidence because you need to promote yourself in your interviews, and should be feeling your best.

This sometimes does help if you get nervous when under scrutiny or when meeting new people, to remember that you made a good impression on the recruiter.

However, their compliments and affirmations do not always translate even into a call back after you apply, so don't feel bad if they don't. You should realize that in an atmosphere of job recession, they have literally hundreds of people applying for one job, and therefore the competition is fierce.

That you are over-qualified, under-qualified, or not qualified at all can be their assessment of you; and regardless, even if you are just perfect, they may find someone else who is equally so and for some small reason decide they are the better candidate.

So one thing to keep in mind is that 'you never get a second chance to make a first impression'. You should do your utmost to put on your best face. Little things to you may be that small reason someone is chosen as the best bet by employment agencies.

This regards your grooming and presentation.

You should be sure to have your hair clean and with a good cut. Your clothes should be clean and unwrinkled, and shoes polished.

Dress as you would if you were actually going to the job you are applying for. If you are a woman, don't wear too much make-up. Don't over or under dress for daylight, in a business or business casual environment.

Be aware of your body language as well when you present yourself to employment agencies. Look at your interviewer and make eye contact. Lean a little forward to show you are interested and forthcoming.

Listen to what is being said and make comments to indicate you heard them and understand.

If you don't understand, be sure to ask them to clarify their point, so that you can. Be positive!
